I’ve always been a little dubious of selfie sticks. They seem to be in the hands of people far younger, and dare I say, more “hipster” than I. So I was a little less than enthusiastic about reviewing the URPOWER Selfie Stick Monopod, but one of my favorite things in life is to challenge my beliefs and the way I see the world, so I pushed through my doubts and tried it.

The first thing you will notice about the product is the box. Besides reminding me of skiing in Colorado, it gave me a laugh or two from the broken English instructions printed on it. You will find that it is pretty simple even if you are confused by the instructions. The product comes in a few pieces. The largest is the monopod itself which has a small micro-USB connector and power switch on the bottom and a standard camera mount screw on the top. The nice thing about this stick is that you can use it with your standard point and shoot digital camera or even a lightweight SLR. I think the hinge to allow selfie shots might be a little weak for the larger SLRs, but I did not try that. You would of course forgo the shutter button on a digital camera (except on some of those Android powered ones), but you could easily make the camera’s timer work for you in this case. A simple one-piece clamp that expands to fit most any smartphone attaches right onto the monopod with its standard screw mount. An additional use case would be to use the clamp to allow a smartphone to attach to a standard tripod. I was very impressed with the lengthwise clamp and the hook that expands to hold your phone from sliding up and out of the clamp. I never felt like my phone was in danger of falling out of the product. I would feel comfortable dangling my phone off

the side of cliff or putting it in other precarious positions with this setup. The final piece was initially the most baffling to me, the mirror. Where does it go? You won’t find any help in the poorly proofread, nearly microscopic instruction booklet. At first I thought maybe you tucked part of the mirror behind your smartphone and hoped for the best, but after looking on the web, the hook part that so nicely keeps your phone secure has a small rail that the mirror slides into. After I figured this little mystery out, it was fantastic; it allowed me to use my higher resolution back camera to take selfie shots with some ability to frame the shot.

Real-life Use
I started by charging the monopod for an hour or so in the car on a recent trip I took to Arkansas with family. I then proceeded to let my fear of being seen with a selfie stick go and took some pictures of me and my father while he drove on the trip. I simply turned by Bluetooth on my phone, turned the selfie stick on, and it was a snap to pair. No passcodes or difficulty getting it to connect. I started the built in camera app on my Android 5 phone (Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition), extended the monopod, and took a few snapshots. I started with using the front facing camera because I had not yet figured out the mirror as I described earlier. It worked with only one hitch, at least on my device. After pressing the shutter button on the front facing camera it immediately switched the rear camera. Not sure if this was my device or setup, but the opposite problem did not occur when I took pictures with the rear facing camera. I also noticed that if any menus were open for the camera app (HDR, timer, etc) it would occasionally hit one of those options instead of the shutter button. Even with these difficulties I still found it quite serviceable. I was even able to start and stop video recording once I put my phone in the appropriate mode. Battery life for the shutter button seems perfectly fine. I found it capable of a full day’s shooting without any need to recharge. I was careful to turn the stick to the “off” position when I was not using it.

The instruction manual tells you if you are having difficulty with the shutter button to download something called “365 Professional Autodyne Software” which I was unable to find anything remotely like that in the Play Store, so I assume that it is a horrible mistranslation. For me the built in camera worked well enough. I just had to be aware that occasionally it might press the wrong button if I had an option menu open. Turning your phone’s shutter sound volume up will help you make sure you got the shot.

Once I figured out how to install the mirror into the phone holder, I never used the front facing camera again. This is where this product stands out. After the mirror is slid into place you don’t have to remove it again. It is still easy to remove your phone and the mirror stays firmly in place. It takes a few tries to learn how to position your phone and the mirror to frame your shots accurately, but I was able to get pretty close with not much effort. For simple shots that you know you are going to crop and edit with later, it’s not an issue. Put your subject in the center of the mirror (which is pretty wide angled), and shoot!

At the end of the monopod there is a hinge that allows whatever camera or phone you’ve attached to be tilted from looking perpendicular to the monopod (straight up or down if you held the monopod parallel to the ground) or up to 90 degrees to look right back at you (or away I suppose). This hinge seems sturdy, but snaps between 11 positions. It makes a rather unnerving snapping sound, and I feel like this might wear down after time, but for now it is more than capable of holding my phone in any orientation without losing its locked hinge position.

One of the ways I really enjoyed using the stick was to extend it to full length, hold it over my head, and take an “artsy” shot looking back down on the scenery. I think I will find many more ways to enjoy this product when I’m on future adventures.

Summary
In short, I found my first foray with selfie sticks to be an enjoyable one; no doubt due to the quality of the URPOWER Monopod. I found myself excited to take pictures and to explore all the new and fun ways to do it with this product. I would have prefered the instructions to be a little clearer, the optional Android software to exist or have been properly identified, and the hinge mechanism to have a continuous range of motion with some sort of locking clamp instead of the multi-position snapping mechanism. In short, I would have no problem recommending this product to someone looking for an inexpensive selfie stick that offers some nice extras.
